Program Overview
WRI's Global Energy Program helps build clean energy markets and change institutions. We start with the consumer in mind — what energy services are needed? Which business models are sustainable? How can regulatory frameworks scale solutions? We take public commitments as a starting point and push forward policies, projects and programs that accelerate and deliver change on the ground. Shifting to a low-carbon, inclusive energy future requires (1) accelerating the pace of renewable energy deployment; (2) increasing energy productivity, so that energy use diverges from economic growth; and (3) addressing the gap that is emerging between those who have clean energy and those who lack basic access. Despite recent progress made in closing the energy access gap, close to 600 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa and 90 million in India lack access to power. While progress has been made globally to connect households to electricity supply, low income areas are being left behind, and health care facilities, schools, and enterprises still lack reliable sources of power. Without new approaches, the 2030 sustainable development goals will not be met. WRI's Energy for Development project is working with partners in the health and livelihood sectors to integrate clean energy into strategies for improving development outcomes. In Phase 1 of the project (2016-2020), we established the appetite of local, national and global organizations in the health and livelihood sectors to integrate clean energy into their efforts, support energy assessments and cost-benefit analysis, and identified finance gaps . In Phase 2, 2020-2024, we will go beyond proof of concept to leverage the scaling power of government and non-governmental organizations working in these sectors to create an evidence base and catalyze innovative financing for cross-sectoral efforts. By working with organizations that serve the poor yet have the ability to scale, we aim to stimulate demand for clean energy while attacking multi-modal poverty, strengthening resilience, and decreasing carbon footprints.
