Description

The United Nations Center for Human Rights and Democracy in Central Africa, based in Yaoundé, Cameroon, was created at the request of member countries of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) and the decision of the UN General Assembly by resolutions of December 5, 1998 (53/78) and December 1, 1999 (54/55).

 

The United Nations Center for Human Rights and Democracy in Central Africa (the Center) works specifically to promote and protect human rights and democracy in 10 countries in Central Africa (Burundi, Cameroon , Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe and Chad). This is done through capacity building, advocacy, lobbying, dialogue, technical assistance and extensive advisory services to Governments, Parliaments, United Nations country teams, National Human Rights Institutions, Organizations of civil society and Media.  

 

The Center offers two-month refresher training scholarships renewable for a maximum of six months, intended for graduate students, young practitioners and human rights defenders holding a diploma in a field related to the activities of the Center in particular. human rights and gender; the democracy ; documentation, communication / advocacy; and administration / finance.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Regional Representative of the United Nations Center for Human Rights and Democracy in Central Africa and the direct supervision of the head of the Human Rights Unit, the scholarship holder will have to accomplish the following tasks:

 

  • Contribute to the collection and analysis of information on human rights and the human rights of women in the countries covered by the Center;
  • Contribute to the preparation and implementation of the activities of the Human Rights cluster with a view to ensuring the integration of the specific issue related to women's and gender rights;
  • Provide practical support in carrying out the Centre's workshops or seminars on gender and women's human rights;
  • Support the search for training tools and techniques on gender mainstreaming;
  • Provide support in the preparation of meetings with the Centre's partners working in the area of ​​gender and women's human rights;
  • <> carry out background research and analysis on the situation 
    of human rights and women's rights in Central Africa;Support research on the state of ratifications and implementation of conventions, protocols related to human rights and gender;
  •  Integrate the gender approach into the activities of the CNUDHD-AC and other country offices in the sub-region;
  • Support research on the state of ratifications and implementation of conventions, protocols and others related to the human rights of women and gender.
  • Support for the implementation of conferences, workshops or seminars of the CNUDHD-AC relating to DHF and Gender (elaboration of invitation letters, lists of participants, taking notes and preparing reports, supporting the logistics component in collaboration with the Conference Assistant).
  • Support for the participation of the CNUDHD-AC in the various activities organized by other structures;
  • Participate in and ensure, as necessary, that the gender dimension is taken into account in monitoring and reporting activities on the human rights situation in the countries covered; analyze trends and issues of women's rights and make proposals for actions to address emerging challenges;
  • Implement any task allowing the proper functioning of the Center, at the request of the Regional Representative or the head of the Human Rights Unit.

  • Be registered in a license year or have obtained a license for less than a year. The same for the Master degree in law, human rights, political science or international relations, or in another related field / a specialization on women's rights and gender issues would be an asset;
  • Professional experience in human rights;
  • Knowledge and / or interest in issues affecting generally marginalized groups;
  • Good writing, research, analysis and synthesis skills;
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work under pressure;
  • Great adaptability and flexibility in the implementation of multiple and varied tasks;
  • Perfect oral and written command of French and English;
  • Good knowledge of computers including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and the Internet.
